Legal & Ethical Use

What you may and may not do with Cheat Engine. Use it responsibly and within the law.

Intended Use

Cheat Engine is for private and educational use. That includes modifying single-player games on your own machine, learning how memory and debugging work, creating and sharing cheat tables for offline games, and testing software you own or have permission to analyze. The author and community expect you to use CE in ways that do not harm others or break agreements.

When you install Cheat Engine, you agree to use it only for legal activities. If the license or terms of a game or application prohibit reverse engineering or modification, you must respect that unless you are in a jurisdiction where the law explicitly allows such use (e.g. certain rights for interoperability or personal use in some countries).

What You Must Not Do

EULA and Terms of Service

Before you attach Cheat Engine to a process, make sure you are not violating the EULA (End User License Agreement) or Terms of Service of that application or game. Some licenses explicitly forbid reverse engineering, disassembly, or modification. In some regions, local law may override certain license terms for personal use or interoperability; if in doubt, seek legal advice or stick to single-player games and educational use where the risk of conflict is lowest.

The author does not condone the illegal use of Cheat Engine. You are responsible for your own actions.

Age Requirement

You must be 18 years or older (or deemed an adult in your jurisdiction) to install and use Cheat Engine. The installer and website state this clearly. This is a condition of use.

Source Code and Redistribution

The source code of Cheat Engine is published for education and transparency. You may study it and compile your own version for private use. You may not publish or redistribute your own build or derivative without permission; that would violate copyright. For licensing or commercial questions, contact the author via the forum.
